For Doug Amacher, a 1988 graduate of the University of Virginia and former member of the Men's Lacrosse team, four years as a UVA student‑athlete led to a life of continued challenge, competition and success. A standout attack player on the field for the 'Hoos, Doug earned All‑American honors in 1988. Following his undergraduate career as a Government major at Virginia, he received a degree in finance from DePaul University in 1999. Today, Doug works for MSD Partners in New York City, a firm created to enable a select group of investors to invest in strategies developed at MSD Capital, the exclusive capital manager for Michael Dell and his family. In his role as Managing Director, Amacher works to build partnerships and provide solutions for investors from around the world. For Doug, creating these part‑ nerships is in many ways like competing in a sport, with challenges, a sense of competition and the feeling of fulfillment that comes with closing a deal. The former attack player attributes much of his professional success to his time as a student‑athlete, competing at the highest level of collegiate lacrosse while managing academic demands. The discipline and work ethic learned at UVA has proved instrumental in Doug's professional career. For Amacher, "There was no better preparation than juggling a demanding schedule, understanding how to learn from and work with a multitude of personalities, and setting your mind on a goal and working to achieve it." In addition, Doug gives credit to the UVA student‑athlete network, explaining the beneficial opportunity to "become part of a special group who maintain loyal allegiance to UVA and are always there and willing to help." A donor to the Virginia Athletics Foundation, Doug gives back in hopes of creating the same oppor‑ tunities and experiences for student‑athletes following in his footsteps. He explains his commitment to the VAF saying, "My giving is a way to say thank you, and at the same time (I hope) it moves the needle a small amount to help current programs and student‑athletes operate in an exceptional environment with the tools necessary to maintain the highest level of competitiveness."
