HOO'S HOT Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVa athletics — Cavalier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. Kristen McNabb ◆ Soccer The fourth-year defender was named the ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week after notching both goals in the Cavaliers' 2-0 win over archrival Virginia Tech Sept. 16 in front of a school-record, 3,966 spectators at Klöckner Stadium. On the other end of the pitch, McNabb helped Virginia post its eighth shut- out of the season. The Wahoos were ranked No. 5 in the country at the time of their win over the No. 17 Hokies, and the triumph helped the Wahoos rise to No. 2 in the rankings. Emily Mulhern ◆ Cross Country The second-year from Ijamsville, Md., opened her season by winning the women's 4K race in the UVA Duals at Panorama Farms in Earlysville. In her second race of the campaign, she helped No. 14 Virginia finish fourth at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational Sept. 23 by placing 15th in the 5,000-meter race. The defending ACC champions came into the year picked to place second in the league, and Mulhern will play a crucial role once again after placing 15th in her debut at the conference meet last fall. Marcus Salandy-Defour ◆ Soccer After suffering an offseason knee injury, the redshirt fourth-year forward was not able to return to the pitch at the beginning of the year. He made his season debut in UVA's 3-0 win over VCU Sept. 14, starting and playing 32 minutes. Against then-No. 6 Clemson three days later, he got back into the scor- ing action by notching a pair of goals in a 3-3 draw for the No. 16 Cavaliers. Salandy-Defour's first career two-goal game netted him ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week laurels. Carl Söderlund ◆ Tennis The incoming first-year from Stockholm, Sweden, was listed No. 1 in the ITA National Freshman/Newcomer rankings after reaching a career-high ATP world ranking of No. 418 this summer. Söderlund has won two professional tournaments, including the Rising Star Tour Futures in Sweden last May. The 6-2 standout was also selected to play on the Swedish Davis Cup team of six for the Europe/Asia Group I Relegation Round against The Netherlands, but could not participate due to illness.
