The coach was out of commission on the charity golf circuit for a few weeks, although he did make appearances at a couple of events in late June. He missed the annual Football 101 women's clinic held on campus each year to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. "He's on injured reserve today, and he doesn't really do to repair a herniated disc in his lower back. The injury had been nagging the coach since the end of the football sea- son, and doctors advised him to fix the problem following the Champs Sports Bowl on Dec. 28. Surgery was delayed until June because of recruiting, spring practice and a string of other scheduled events. Notre Dame released a statement the day after the op- injured reserve very well," said Kelly's wife, Paqui, who organizes the yearly event. "But he's being a good patient and doing things he needs to do to get up and running just like he'd expect from his own players." The surgery was scheduled in early June in order to give Kelly plenty of time to be back at full strength for the start of training camp Aug. 4. — Dan Murphy On June 27, the University of Michigan announced that its series with Notre Dame will take a two-year break in 2018-19 but resume in 2020. The Notre Dame-Michigan football rivalry has been a main staple of college football since the two renewed their series in 1978, but there were also two-year breaks in 1983-84, 1995-96 and 2000-01. Which team will take Michigan's place on Notre Dame's schedule is to be determined, but Colorado filled home- and-home spots for the Irish in 1983-84. Ohio State, Texas, Washington and Vanderbilt were two-year fill-ins in place of schools such as Michigan and Michigan State in 1995-96, and Nebraska and Texas A&M were added in 2000-01. Since the renewal of the series against the Wolverines, Michigan has a 14-13-1 advantage after scoring the winning touchdown each of the last three years with 11, 27 and two seconds remaining, respectively.
