"Our last game against JMU was so frustrating because I knew we could've and should've won that game," she said. "… Next year, from our very first practice to every game, we need to bring maximum intensity and focus on finishing every play like it's our only game." Shoemaker played with plenty of intensity and focus this past season en route to a career year. She tallied personal bests with 51 goals and 62 points, numbers that earned her first-team All- ACC and second-team All-South Region honors. She also posted a team-best .531 shooting percentage, while tallying multiple goals in 16 of UVA's 20 games this season. Along the way, she racked up 10 hat tricks and a team-leading three game-winning goals. "I'd say Avery Shoemaker was a quick and easy find on the field," head coach Julie Myers said. "… I'm excited for her to ma- ture as a player and a leader next year. We're ready to train her game to grow. There are no limits for Avery — I'm very happy we get her back for another year." Virginia was the heart's desire for Shoemaker in the first place. "I feel very fortunate because I wouldn't have had the opportu- nity to study here if I hadn't been a lacrosse player," she noted. Shoemaker's wide variety of studies at Virginia and future re- flect her competitive nature. "I would love to go into digital marketing when I graduate," she said. "I think I'll enjoy the competitive atmosphere along with the creativity of it." In the meantime, though, she will continue to refine her com- petitive edge on the lacrosse field at Klöckner Stadium. — Jerry Reid Photo by Matt Riley/courtesy UVA
