snapshot GOOD AS GOLD Third-year golfer Thomas Walsh picked a great time to capture his first collegiate tournament, fir- ing the best 54-hole score in the 65-year history of the ACC Cham- pionships en route to winning the gold medal given to the league's individual champion April 20-22 at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. He shot a sparkling 16-under-par 200 — his best effort as a collegian — to edge Clemson's Doc Redman by two strokes. "It is incredible," the Tar Heel State native told VirginiaSports.com. "It is hard to put into words. It is the best thing that has ever happened to my golf career. It's my only win in college. I could not wish it any other way, especially doing this in my home state. "I've been coming to this thing for maybe 10 years. I always wanted to just play in the tourna- ment. To win it is incredible." Walsh's performance helped the Cavaliers finish fourth out of 12 teams with a 24-under 840 — the program's best-ever score at the ACC Championships. He is the fourth UVA golfer to earn medal- ist honors at the league tourna- ment, joining Pete Arend (1955), Ben Rusch (2012) and Jimmy Stanger (2017). For his efforts, Walsh was tabbed as the ACC Golfer of the Month for April and earned a spot on the 2018 All-ACC team. He finished the season with a team-best 70.71 stroke average, and was ranked No. 44 nationally in the Golfstat college standings and No. 65 in the Golfweek indi- vidual poll as of May 18.
