Getting To Know Assistant Mens Basketball Coach Rod Balanis Nickname: Hot Rod. Supposedly my parents named me after [former West Virginia star] Hot Rod Hundley. We had no connection to Hot Rod Hundley at all. Memorable athletic achievement: I went to DeMatha High School [in Maryland], and my senior year in high school we beat the No. 1 team in the country, Archbishop Molloy [of New York City]. In college [he attended Georgia Tech from 1990-94], I redshirted as a freshman, but we went to the Final Four in 1990. Id love to go back at least once as a coach. College major: Industrial management. If I had to do it over again, I was a very strong math and science student. I was at one of the best engineering schools in the country. I probably would have been an engineer. Of course, I dont know what an engineering degree would do for me now being a basketball coach. Dream job if basketball didnt exist: Im a sports junkie, so I think Id be involved in something in sports. My father was the head coach at William & Mary back in the 1970s. He has been working for Nike for 25 years. I had a sales job with Riddell when I first got done playing. Favorite Off-Campus Spot: I hit Einstein Bros Bagels every morning. That would be my spot. Song or Artist Youre Listening To Most Right Now: Maybe Jay-Z. Im old school. Role Model: Probably my father [George]. He got out of the [coaching] business because he had two kids, and back then a college basketball coach the money wasnt great. I think he kind of lives vicariously through me. He sacrificed for his family. Favorite Pro Athlete: I really loved [Boston Celtics legend] Larry Bird. You Have One Last Meal, What Is It? Shake N Bake pork chops and fried broccoli.
