98 ■ THE WOLFPACKER WOLFPACK FOOTBALL the past summer. Thompson, Collins and Saunders are in junior colleges in Kansas. Brown, Collins, Robinson, Saunders and Thompson represented five of the eight players signed from the state of Florida in the class. Current And Future Pack Players Affected By Hurricane Florence NC State redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Joe Sculthorpe had his heart in two places during Hurricane Florence, which made landfall near Wrightsville Beach on the North Carolina coastline Sept. 14. The reserve interior lineman is from Hampstead, N.C., which is a little more than 16 miles north of Wilmington and Wrights- ville Beach by the Atlantic Ocean. The for- mer Topsail High standout said his parents and grandmother waited out Florence, los- ing power and water for about five days. "They were waiting to see what the hur- ricane was going to do," Sculthorpe said. "If at the last minute, it was really bad, they would have left. Luckily, it died down from a category four. They just rode it out and were fine. "I know it isn't as bad as it could have been, but the people there are making sure everything is going as smooth as possible." The family's home is near the beach and has weathered past hurricanes over the years. NC State head coach Dave Doeren and staff told the Sculthorpe family if they needed to get out of the area and join Joe in Raleigh, they had the option. Sculthorpe noted that luckily his family suffered mini- mal damage. Sculthorpe has seen the images of I-40 turning into a river in certain parts, and the rescue scenes with people and pets. He knows some people who went through difficult times. "I know certain neighborhoods back home on 210, which is the highway con- necting to Interstate 40, there was some pretty bad flooding up to the knees and stuff," Sculthorpe said. "Everyone sees 40 just covered with water and it's ridiculous. Back home, that would be the highway I'd take to Wilmington. It's a pretty scary sight." Sculthorpe juggled school work, prepar- ing to play West Virginia and worrying about his loved ones until the decision to cancel the WVU game was made Sept. 11. "When we cancelled the game, that gave me the chance to call my whole family and make sure it was okay," Sculthorpe said. "If we had played the game, I would have put everything to keep my mind straight on football. "My parents have lived on the coast a long time and know what to do." Sculthorpe was not the only member of the Wolfpack football family to be affected by Hurricane Florence. Class of 2019 re- ceiver commitment Chris Toudle lives in Wilmington and plays for Hoggard High. For the most part, Toudle and his family also emerged unscathed with thankfully minimal damage, but Toudle did have to labor without power for about six days. "It was just a bunch of wind gusts," Tou- dle recalled. "It wasn't as much wind as we thought it would be, minimal flooding, but other than that it was something we could ride out and felt good about staying." Dealing with lack of air conditioning in the aftermath of Florence plus general boredom were the difficult tasks for Tou- dle. School was out for about a month. All Toudle could do was try to stay active. "I exercised and worked out, and just got out when I can," Toudle said. Hoggard High returned to the football field for the first time Oct. 5 after three straight weeks off. "I think it was good for the community to come out on a Friday night to watch us play," Toudle noted. "It just brings unity all around us." ■ Redshirt sophomore guard Joe Sculthorpe's family rode out Hurricane Florence at their home in Topsail, N.C.
