Virginia athletics director Carla Williams was announced on July 23 as the Women Leaders in College Sports 2019 Administrator of the Year for all NCAA Division I FBS athletics programs. She is one of eight female administrators from different levels of college athletics that will be honored Oct. 15 at the organization's 2019 Women Leaders National Convention in Phoenix. Williams was nominated by her peers and selected based on her service during the 2018-19 academic year. Under Williams' direction in 2018-19, UVA won two NCAA Championships (men's basketball and men's lacrosse), finished eighth in the Directors' Cup all- sports standings, won the Capital One Cup Award for men's sports and launched the $180 million Master Plan for athletics improvements including a new football operations center and an Olympic sports center. Williams was named UVA's director of athletics in October of 2017. She was the first female African-American athletics director at a Power Five conference in- stitution. At the time, she was the fifth active female athletics director at that level. A pair of NCAA men's championships and a top-five ranking in men's tennis during the 2018-19 season led the University of Virginia to its second Capital One Cup all- sports competition championship for men's sports. The Capital One Cup competition is based on a system that grants points to top- 10 finishes in NCAA Division I champion- ships and in final official coaches' polls. A separate champion is awarded for men's sports and women's sports. The Virginia men finished with 127 points, earning 60 points for each of its final No. 1 rankings in men's basketball and la- crosse, six points for its final No. 5 ranking in men's tennis and one point for its 10th- place finish in men's swimming and diving. "We are proud to win the Capital One Cup trophy for the second time in five years," University of Virginia Athletics Director Carla Williams said. "This honor is representative of the hard work of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, donors and fans, and is a proud moment for our Uni- versity. We had a fantastic athletics season, highlighted by a pair of NCAA champion- ships. We look forward to ensuring our sports programs are a source of great pride for the University, the community and the Commonwealth as we embark on our Master Plan. On behalf of the University of Virginia, we would like to thank Capital One for its enduring commitment to college athletics." In recognition of this achievement, Capi- tal One presented a trophy and a check for $200,000 for student-athlete scholarships to the University of Virginia. That presentation was made July 10 at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles. A school-record three NCAA champion- ships helped Virginia claim the Capital One Cup for men's sports in 2014-15. Williams Named Women Leaders in College Sports Administrator of the Year Virginia Wins Capital One Cup for Men's Sports Academic Honor Roll The 63rd annual Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll, recognizing aca- demic excellence by student-athletes during the 2018-19 academic year, was announced July 9th by Commissioner John Swofford. Virginia placed a record 427 student- athletes on the Honor Roll. A total of 31 Cavaliers were recognized for the fourth time during their careers, with three (Evan Butts/football, Cory Harris/men's lacrosse, Carrera Lucas/field hockey) being honored for the fifth time. The Honor Roll is comprised of student- athletes who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full academic year. The conference recognized a record 4,769 student-athletes for their hard work in the classroom during the 2018-19 academic year. During the course of the year, UVA had 105 student-athletes named to ACC All- Academic teams and three were awarded ACC Postgraduate Scholarships.
