14 CAVALIER CORNER BY STEVE DOWNEY I T PROVED TO BE A BANNER YEAR for Virginia athletics in 2018-19. NCAA championships in men's bas- ketball and men's lacrosse propelled the Cavaliers to an eighth-place finish in the final Directors' Cup standings. In the process, UVA notched its sixth top- 10 showing during this decade and placed in the top 25 for the 13th consecutive year. It also is now one of 12 schools to rank in the top 30 of the final standings in all 26 years the program has been in existence. The two national titles also led Virginia to its second Capital One Cup all-sports competition championship for men's sports, a feat previously achieved in 2014-15. It is based on a system that grants points to top-10 finishes in NCAA Division I cham- pionships and in final official coaches' polls. A separate champion is awarded for men's sports and women's sports. The Cavalier men finished with 127 points, earning 60 for each of its final No. 1 rankings in basketball and lacrosse, six points for its final No. 5 showing in tennis, and one point for its 10th-place finish in swimming and diving.
