AUGUST 2019 27 tention turns to the season where UVA was picked to finish first in the Coastal Division for the first time. But if you think expectations are big on the outside, that's nothing compared to the goals of the play- ers themselves. "The coaches make sure that we remain humble, even as we embrace it," Snowden said. "They always tell us, day in and day out, that last year was last year. It's over with. "We are really focused on this year. Even though we know we had a good sea- son, we also know there was a lot of room to grow, a lot of games we let slip away. So last year, we're proud of it. It's a great ac- complishment. But it's over. We have to be focused on being better this season." In fact, the way the regular season ended in 2018 — a pair of overtime losses to Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech — rarely leaves his mind for long. "Those two games; I still have nights that I go to bed and think about one play here or there that would've been the differ- ence," he said. "I just know for me person- ally, I could've changed the outcome of those games. Games like those definitely keep you humble, keep you hungry. "The season after the 2-10 season, that propelled us. And that blowout loss to Navy [in the 2017 Military Bowl] pro- pelled us last year. We've got to make sure this past season and the way those overtime losses went, that propels us into this year too." If the Wahoos are able to win the divi- sion for the first time in school history, it will likely be in part because of Snowden coming off the edge consistently all year long. Pretty big shoes for a guy who once con- sidered himself a "basketball player" to fill on the gridiron. "I think after these two years now, foot- ball has gotten into my bones," Snowden said with a laugh. "I still love basketball. But now? I'm a football guy, man." "We are really focused on this year. Even though we know we had a good sea- son, we also know there was a lot of room to grow, a lot of games we let slip away. … We have to be focused on being better this season." SNOWDEN
