Tom Knight Makes European All-Star Trip Irish forward Tom Knight traveled to Estonia during the final week of July to play with a group of East Coast AllStars in an international tournament. The senior on Mike Brey's basketball team is one of 12 U.S. college players on the roster, which includes Louisville's Russ Smith as well as Rakeem Christmas and Michael Gbinije of Syracuse. Knight averaged 8.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in 34 games last season. He was named Notre Dame's most improved player at the end of the year. He and the rest of the all-star team have games scheduled against similar teams from Belarus, Estonia and the Republic of Georgia. "I'm really looking forward to this trip. This will be my first time in Europe," he told UND.com. "This really is a chance for me to do something different and have a new experience. It's going to break up the summer for me and give me the opportunity to play basketball in a really different environment." New Competition Coming to Compton Notre Dame released its first schedule as a member of the Hockey East Association in early July. It's a slate highlighted by games against rival Boston College and several new, talented teams visiting South Bend. Northeastern, Boston University, Maine and UMass-Lowell are among some of the fast-paced conference opponents that will travel to play Notre Dame in its inaugural season in the Hockey East. The Irish maintained their annual meeting with old CCHA member Western Michigan as well as out-of-conference games with Minnesota-Duluth and Lake Superior State. The highlight of the year will likely be the Jan. 4 showdown with Boston College at Fenway Park, as well as the regular-season finale between those two teams at the Eagles' home rink Feb. 28. ✦
