JANUARY 2023 THE WOLVERINE 33   MICHIGAN FOOTBALL Sophomore quarterback J.J. McCar- thy was a second-team selection by the media and third-team honoree from the Big Ten coaches. His 12-0 start as Michigan's QB1 is the most consecutive wins to start a career in program history. Graduate wide receiver Ronnie Bell (third team, coaches and media) and gradu- ate tight end Luke Schoonmaker (third team, coaches; honorable mention, me- dia) were also all-conference picks. Michigan had a pair of first-team All- Big Ten performers on the defensive side of the ball in senior linemen Mike Morris and Mazi Smith, who were voted to the top 10 by the coaches and media. Morris was also the Big Ten's Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year, becoming the sixth player in U-M history to earn the honor. Sophomore linebacker Junior Colson (second team, coaches; third team, me- dia), senior cornerback DJ Turner (sec- ond team, coaches; third team, media) and graduate linebacker Michael Barrett (third team, coaches; honorable men- tion, media) were the other defenders to make the all-conference squad. Graduate cornerback Gemon Green (honorable mention, coaches and media), junior defensive lineman Kris Jenkins (honorable mention, coaches and me- dia), senior defensive back Mike Sainristil (honorable mention, coaches and me- dia), junior edge Jaylen Harrell (honorable mention, media), junior safety Makari Paige (honorable mention, media) and sophomore safety Rod Moore (honorable mention, media) also received defensive recognition from the Big Ten. Graduate kicker Jake Moody was the Big Ten's Kicker of the Year and earned first-team honors from both the coaches and media. Junior wide receiver AJ Hen- ning was a second-team selection as a return specialist by both voting parties. — Anthony Broome Graduate kicker Jake Moody was selected as the Big Ten's Bakken-Andersen Kicker of the Year for the second straight season. With 136 points in 13 games, he needs just three more points to pass Desmond Howard (138 in 1991) for the highest-scoring season in U-M history.
