JANUARY 2023 THE WOLVERINE 35   MICHIGAN FOOTBALL ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH BIFF POGGI ACCEPTS HEAD COACH JOB AT CHARLOTTE Several coaches helped Jim Harbaugh turn Michigan around this year, but one — Biff Poggi — really served at a confidant. Poggi, 63, accepted the head coaching job at Charlotte Nov. 15, and he'll be missed. Harbaugh praised Poggi effusively after his friend ac- cepted his new job. "Biff has been a tremendous asset to our University of Michigan football program, providing support and mentorship to our coaching staff and players," Har- baugh said. "He has a great football mind, knows how to prepare a team during the week and on game day, and is a coach that aims to change the lives of his play- ers in a positive way." More than that, he was like a brother to Harbaugh. Not many have a relationship with their boss where they can say what's on their mind, no matter what, and keep their jobs when it gets heated. The two "fought like brothers" at times, in fact, but Harbaugh respected him so much that he ran almost every big decision by him. "The people at Michigan rave about this man's ability to build, to motivate and to lead," Charlotte athletics director Mike Hill said of Poggi. "He's the associate head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, and he is now the head coach of the Charlotte 49ers." — Chris Balas OFFENSE Pos. No. Name Ht. Wt. Yr. QB 9 J.J. Oddly enough, a pair of captains in senior quarterback Cade McNamara and senior tight end Erick All were the first two Wolverines to depart the program before the 2022 campaign concluded. Both former Wolverines suffered season-ending injuries during nonconference play. Allowed to enter the portal before Dec. 5 because he's a graduate, McNamara actually did so Nov. 28, before commit- ting to Iowa Dec. 1. All, who entered the portal Dec. 5, took just one visit — to Iowa City — and made his pledge to the Hawkeyes Dec. 14. McNamara started 16 career games at U-M, helping lead the Maize and Blue to the 2021 Big Ten championship and a College Football Playoff appearance. He completed 267 of his 423 passes for 3,181 yards with 21 touchdowns and 7 interceptions during his career. All appeared in 33 contests during his four-year career, racking up 54 catches for 565 yards and 2 touchdowns. Three Wolverine reserves entered the portal in December — sophomore tight end Louis Hansen, sophomore defensive lineman George Rooks and graduate quarterback Alan Bow- man. Rooks and Bowman will remain on the roster through the College Football Playoff. — Clayton Sayfie
