58 THE WOLVERINE JANUARY 2023   OLYMPIC SPORTS Men's Gymnastics The U-M men unofficially kicked off their season with an intrasquad meet at Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor Dec. 10. The Maize squad took down the Blue team by a score of 319.100-317.400, winning four of the six events. Senior Paul Juda led the way for the Maize team, capturing three event titles and the all-around portion of the meet. The real competition begins when Simpson and Greenville come to Ann Arbor for a tri-meet Jan. 7. Michigan will then hit the road for the Windy City In- vitational Jan. 14 in Chicago and the Rocky Mountain Open Jan. 21 at Colo- rado Springs, Colo. Women's Gymnastics Michigan earned an exhibition quad meet wins over Central Michigan, West- ern Michigan and Eastern Michigan Dec. 10 at Crisler Center. Senior Sierra Brooks took home four event titles, while graduate student Natalie Wojcik grabbed a title on the beam. U-M opens its 2023 season in the Super 16 meet Jan. 7 in Las Vegas, where it will take on No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 5 Auburn and No. 10 UCLA. It then hosts Denver and Fisk for a tri-meet in Ann Arbor Jan. 13. Men's Swimming And Diving The Wolverines, who are off to a 5-2 start, competed at the Tennessee Invitational Nov. 17-19 in Knoxville, Tenn. U-M combined for 14 NCAA "B" cut times during the first two days of the event, headlined by a pair of wins from sophomore Cameron Gammage in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. Sophomore Gal Groumi had a victory in the 200-yard in- dividual medley on Day 1, finishing with a time of 1:43.67. Groumi also set a new meet record en route to a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:41.40, one of six NCAA "B" cuts on the final day to bring U-M's total to 20 for the weekend. The Wolverines split their scoring meets on the final day with wins over North Carolina and Carson-Newman and losses to No. 10 Tennessee and No. 8 Virginia. U-M returns to action Jan. 14 at Indiana. Women's Swimming And Diving Michigan (5-3) combined for 10 NCAA "B" cut times on the first day of the Knoxville Invitational Nov. 17, headlined by freshman Katie Crom's second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. The second day saw them collect another 11 "B" cut times thanks to the team of senior Sophia Kudryashova, Chrom, freshman Riley Francis and freshman Christey Liang grabbing U-M's first win of the event in the 800-yard free- style relay. The Wolverines defeated Carson Newman on the final day, but fell to host Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia, com- bining for 12 NCAA "B" cut times on the day. The Wolverines return to action Jan. 14 at Indiana. Water Polo Michigan's schedule for the 2023 season was released Dec. 1 ahead of its first campaign under new head coach Cassie Churnside. The Wolverines open at the ASU Chal- lenge Jan. 13-15 in Phoenix, where it will take on Biola, California Baptist, Azusa Pacific and Arizona State. Wrestling No. 6-ranked Michigan claimed 9 of 10 matches to de- feat Columbus 38-6 at its home opener at Cliff Keen arena Nov. 20, headlined by a pair of first-period pins from redshirt junior Cole Mattin (141 pounds) and fifth-year Mason Parris (heavyweight) to move the team to 3-0 on the season. The Wolverines followed it up with a fourth-place finish out of 33 teams at the Cliff Keen Invitational Dec. 2-3 in Las Vegas. Parris had takedowns in the first and third periods to defeat Northwestern's No. 6-ranked Lucas Davison 6-4 in the heavyweight title match, making him a two-time Cliff Keen heavyweight champ. Next up for U-M is a road trip to California, where it will take on Cal Poly Jan. 6 and Cal State Bakersfield Jan. 8. Volleyball Michigan finished its season 17-13 after splitting its final two matchups of the season, suffering a 3-2 loss (25-9, 25- 19, 18-25, 24-26, 13-15) at Iowa Nov. 23 before a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-9, 25-11) over Rutgers on Senior Day Nov. 25. The Wolverines did not qualify for postseason play. — Anthony Broome Senior middle blocker Jess Robinson (14) was named to the AVCA North All-Region team along with junior outside hitter Jess Mruzik.
