AUGUST 2023 11 cavalier sports Ashley Anumba • Track & Field In her final meet as a Cavalier, the graduate student from Ran- cho Cucamonga, Calif., posted a career-best runner-up finish to earn first-team All-America acco- lades in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 7-10 in Austin, Texas. Anumba's toss of 61.13 meters (200 feet, 6 inches) was bested by only Oregon's Jorinde Van Klinken, whose throw of 65.55 meters (215-0) set an NCAA Championships record. Ben James • Golf The first-year from Milford, Conn., was named the winner of the 2023 NCAA Division I Phil Mickelson Outstanding Fresh- man Award and also became the first UVA rookie to earn first-team All-America honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America. James boasted a school-record stroke average of 69.0 for 40 rounds of play, posted five first-place and 11 top-six finishes, and was ranked No. 3 na- tionally in Golfweek's final individual standings. Natasha Subhash • Tennis The Intercollegiate Tennis As- sociation named the Fairfax, Va., native the national recipient of the 2023 Arthur Ashe Leader- ship & Sportsmanship Award, which goes to the student-ath- lete who embodies the legacy of tennis icon and humanitarian Arthur Ashe Jr. on and off the court. Subhash, a two-time Academic All-American and four-time ITA All-American, is the first Virginia student- athlete, male or female, to earn the prestigious honor. Kyle Teel • Baseball The third-year from Mahwah, N.J., was named the 2023 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year. He also was tabbed the ACC Player of the Year and was a consensus first-team All-American. Teel batted .407 with a career-high 13 home runs and 65 RBI, plus threw out 15 runners attempting to steal while managing a pitching staff that sported the fourth-lowest ERA in the country. After the sea- son he was selected No. 14 overall by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft. The Hoos' previous-best fin- ish was a 10th-place showing in 2017. The Cavaliers finished seventh in stroke play to advance to match play. It was their first appearance in match play since the NCAA adopted that format to decide the team national champion in 2009. The sev- enth-seeded Cavaliers lost to the second- seeded Gators 3-2 during a match that was not decided until the 18th hole.
