12 CAVALIER CORNER BY WILLIAM JARRETT W ith the 2023-24 UVA athletic year approaching and fall sports right around the corner, we would like to take one last look back at the incredible accomplishments and feats achieved by our student-athletes and teams during the 2022-23 season. "This year brought both incredible pain and incredible triumph, and through it all, our student-athletes, coaches and staff showed up every day for each other, and we found purpose and healing in competing for something greater than ourselves," Virginia director of athletics Carla Williams said. "They are amazing and it's an honor to be around such inspiration on a daily basis." Virginia saw its NCAA championship total rise to 33 this past year, with both women's swimming and diving and men's tennis de- fending their national crowns. The women's swimmers have now won three straight titles (2021, 2022 and 2023) while men's tennis made it two in a row (2022 and 2023). Women's swimming and diving domi- nated yet again at the NCAA Champion- ships, becoming the fifth program to achieve a three-peat as well as the fourth program to sweep all five relay events. The Wahoos were led by fourth-year Kate Douglass, who won the Honda Sports Award for Swimming and Diving for the second con- secutive year after capturing three individual NCAA titles (200 individual medley, 100 butterfly and 200 breaststroke) and being part of four NCAA relay championships (200 2022-23 DIRECTORS' CUP FINAL TOP 10 Rk. Douglass was also named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and ACC Women's Swimmer of the Year for women's swimming. The women's swimming and diving team also featured sisters Gretchen and Alex Walsh, who were each part of the four NCAA relay championships. Gretchen, a third-year, also claimed individual titles in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle while Alex, a fourth-year, took home the 400 individual medley crown. The men's tennis squad claimed its sixth NCAA title in program history after taking down Ohio State in the NCAA final. Follow- ing a similar story from last season, the Hoos started slowly in the beginning of the regular season but got hot after the ITA Indoor Championships, going on to win 22 straight matches to close out the season. Virginia is one of three Division I tennis programs since 2000 to successfully defend its title. Georgia did it in 2007-08, USC did it from 2009-12, and Virginia accomplished the feat from 2015-17 and again in 2022-23. As for the national championship coaches, women's swimming and diving
