34 CAVALIER CORNER cavalier profile MAGGIE CAGLE Second-Year • Soccer Those who follow the Virginia women's soccer program know it's not unusual for the Cavaliers to have young players come in and make an immediate impact. The 2022 campaign was no different, when Maggie Cagle an- nounced her presence on the collegiate landscape right out of the gates. The first-year connected with Rebecca Jarrett early in the second half of the season opener against George Mason for her first assist of the season on what proved to be the game-winning goal. It wasn't the last time Cagle would deliver a timely ball for the Hoos. She went on to lead the team with 12 assists last year, with 7 of them coming on game-winning goals. In fact, her 12 assists and 7 game-winning assists led all first-years in NCAA Division I soccer last year. The 12 assists tied for the eighth most in a single season at Virginia. She also added 4 goals, including a pair of game-winning goals, directly factoring into nine of the Hoos' 16 wins on the year. "Maggie has world-class potential," head coach Steve Swanson said. "It's rare to find someone who can beat you and break you down one-on-one, even if you're playing good defense. Maggie has the skill set where even if a defender is playing really good defense, she can still beat you. She has a great awareness of where players are around her and how to use them. There's a real sophistication in her game. She can combine, she can cross very well or she can fin- ish on her own. We're excited about her potential. "The biggest thing she's coming to realize is that she has to solve things different ways at this level," Swanson added. "She can't just use her speed to beat players all the time or her one-on-one ability — it's what tools can she pull out at different times to break people down based on their strengths. She's one of a few players who has that skill set and has multiple tools in her toolbox to draw from to break teams down." Cagle earned third-team All-ACC and All-Freshman honors a year ago by using those tools to help the Cavaliers to the Elite Eight of the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Swanson and the Hoos look for Cagle to take that next step forward in her second-year campaign, which kicks off Aug. 17 when Virginia hosts Nevada. — Bill Bunting • Photo by Matt Riley/courtesy UVA Athletics
