10 CAVALIER CORNER cavalier sports HOO'S TWEETING .02 Percent of the in- dividuals who have played college football (1,074 out of 5.62 million) over the past 153 seasons have earned induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, per the Na- tional Football Foundation. Former Virginia star wide receiver Herman Moore will look to join that exclusive club this year. He is one of the 78 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision that are on the 2024 ballot. Moore racked up 114 receptions for 2,504 yards and 27 touchdowns for the Cavaliers from 1988-90. He holds the NCAA record for highest average gain per recep- tion (22.0) with a minimum of 105 catches. In 1990, he was a consensus first-team All- American and placed sixth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy. A total of five former Cavalier players have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The most recent inductee was All- America safety Anthony Poindexter, who was a member of the 2020 class. UVA's other inductees include Bill Dudley (1956 class), Tom Scott (1979), Joe Palumbo (1999) and Jim Dombrowski (2008). Former Cavalier head coaches inducted into the Hall include Earle "Greasy" Neale (1967), Frank Murray (1983) and George Welsh (2004). 6 Appearances in the College World Series for the Virginia baseball program, all in the past 15 years (2009, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2021 and 2023) under head coach Brian O'Connor. The six trips to Omaha are tied with Arkansas, Texas and TCU for the second most of any program in that span. Only Florida has more with 8. 5 First-team All-Americans for the UVA men's track and field squad — the most for the program since 2017 — at the NCAA Championships in June: fifth-year Ethan Dabbs (sec- ond-place finish, javelin), second- year Nate Mountain (fourth, 3,000 meters), third-year Conor Murphy (fifth, 800 meters), graduate stu- dent Owayne Owens (sixth, triple jump) and fifth-year Derek Johnson (eighth, 3,000 meters). The Cavaliers' points scored (21) and team placement (11th) both rank third in program history. UVA finished the year at No. 10 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's NCAA Division I Program of the Year standings. 2 Cavaliers have been tabbed ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove winners since its inception in 2007: outfielder Jarrett Parker in 2010 and outfielder Ethan O'Donnell in 2023. This year, O'Donnell started every game for UVA in center field and recorded 190 putouts. He committed only 1 error and had a team-best 6 outfield assists. " I fully support and respect his decision. He desires to go chase that dream and play Major League Baseball, and I don't fault him for it. I know his teammates are going to be excited, but also disappointed a little bit because we were looking forward to what he was going to bring to Virginia football." — UVA football head coach Tony Elliott on third-year quarterback Jay Woolfolk's decision to concentrate on the sport of baseball and no longer participate as a member of the football program " I'm like, 'Well, I still have to find myself. I'm still alive, right?' I still have a purpose. Yes, I played football. Yes, I had a great career, but what am I today? … I wanted something that I could offer. … I'm qualified to do this work and I play football." — Former UVA and New York Jets offensive tackle D'BRICKASHAW FERGUSON, 39, on choosing to go to nursing school to pursue his dream of giving back during the "NFL Players: Second Acts" podcast PHOTO BY AL PEREIRA/NEW YORK JETS
