AUGUST 2023 3 Dear Cavalier Fans, We are enjoying summertime here in Charlottesville and hope you are, too. Many student-athletes have been on Grounds training and taking classes and we're looking forward to having them all back on Grounds when classes and the fall sports season begins. We reached exciting milestones for the Athletics Master Plan in June when we broke ground on the Olympic Sports Complex and celebrated placement of the final steel beam atop the Football Operations Center. We are grateful to our donors whose generous support has made this progress possible. The Athletics Department announced 568 student-athletes who earned their way onto the ACC Academic Honor Roll with a 3.0+ GPA during the aca- demic year. This was an all-time department best. Our student-athletes are working hard in the classroom and in competition. The VAF staff continue to focus on raising money to support our student- athletes and there are several ways that our donors help. 1) The Annual Fund helps pay for scholarships, academic support and sport-specific operational support. As scholarship and operating costs increase each year, a strong Annual Fund is critical to building champions in competition, in the classroom, and in the community. 2) The Cavalier Academic Achievement Fund awards up to $5,980 each year to student-athletes who complete the Pathways Program. This unique program contributes to a holistic student-athlete experi- ence, by focusing on career readiness and networking, leadership, personal development and community engagement. 3) Sport Enhancement Funds provide additional operational support that is critical for each of our sport programs. 4) Endowment gifts for scholarships and operational needs are among the most powerful investments a donor can make as they create a lasting impact. 5) Facilities support is paramount so that we can complete the Athlet- ics Master Plan. More than 7,100 donors have already made their 2023 Annual Fund com- mitment. If you have not done so yet, we hope you will make your pledge soon. Making a pledge of $100 or more now ensures that you will continue to receive Cavalier Corner, as this is the last issue that will be sent to donors who have not yet made a 2023 pledge. Please consider paying your pledge by September 30, as it will help us pay the first semester scholarship bill for our student-athletes and you will receive additional priority points. We are grateful for your continued support throughout the year and excited to watch along with you as our student-athletes compete this fall. Thank you! Sincerely, The Virginia Athletics Foundation 2023 BOARD OF TRUSTEES OFFICERS President Franklin S. Edmonds Jr., Charlottesville, Va. Vice President Rachel Ward Sheridan, McLean, Va.
