and on a Wednesday against Ferris State, but the schedule gets really interesting in January and February when Big Ten play begins. Though the Maize and Blue will play on either Friday or Saturday (and one Sunday) in all 20 league contests, their start times vary considerably, with games as early as 5 p.m. and as late as 9 p.m. "It'll get us out of our regular routine," Berenson said. "I know the Big Ten Network wanted to have some doubleheaders on Fridays. We're excited about the Big Ten, and the schedule will be part of it. "We'll make it work. I think the crowds will like it. I'm open to all of it. It's a good idea, and I think it will be good for the fans, too." Ranking Michigan's Non-Conference Matchups 1. Boston College, Oct. 10: Two of the premier programs in college hockey history — between them Michigan (nine) and BC (five) have won 14 NCAA titles and have nine additional runner-up finishes — U‑M and Boston College have faced off 17 times (the Wolverines own an 11‑6‑0 mark), including six postseason matchups. Michigan has won the last three over the Eagles. 2. Boston University, Oct. 25: In Beantown the debate rages over which program is superior — Boston College or Boston University. The Terriers have claimed five NCAA titles with five more finals appearances but can't match BC for recent success. Michigan and BU have not played since 2009‑10, and U‑M has some revenge to exact, losing the last two to Boston University (but is 13‑10‑0 overall in the series). 3. Western Michigan, Dec. 27: A CCHA foe for more than 25 years, WMU has only recently become a threat. The Broncos were ranked in each of the last 12 meetings between the two. A year ago, Michigan went 3-3 against the Broncos, sweeping Western in its own building in the CCHA quarterfinals to end any hope of WMU advancing to the NCAA Tournament. This one takes on added significance because it will take place outside at the Detroit Tigers' Comerica Park as part of the 2014 NHL Winter Classic festivities. 4. At New Hampshire, Oct. 18‑19: The first of two non-conference two-game series away from Yost, New Hampshire is still looking for its first NCAA title despite 22 postseason appearances (and losses in the finals in 1999 and 2003). U‑M is 5‑2‑2 against the Wildcats with the ties coming in the most recent meetings between the schools. 5. UMass-Lowell, Oct. 26: The River Hawks are a 'hot' team right now, having advanced to the Frozen Four a year ago — their first semifinal appearance as a Division I program. UMass-Lowell and Michigan have never met before, but UML only went Division I in 1984 so it hasn't had the history of many of the teams on this list. 6. At Nebraska-Omaha, Nov. 15‑16: The Mavericks and Wolverines met
