UNDER THE DOME DAVARIS DANIELS NOT ENROLLED THIS SPRING, BUT PLANS RETURN Notre Dame junior wide receiver DaVaris Daniels has been suspended from the university and is not enrolled during this spring semester because of academic reasons. In a statement released Jan. 9, Daniels said: "I understand that attending the University of Notre Dame is a privilege and with that comes a certain level of academic responsibility. Therefore, I will not be attend- ing Notre Dame in the spring semester but fully expect to re-enroll in the summer semester to earn my degree and continue playing football for the Irish." Daniels also sent out a tweet that stated: "Small bump. Not entering the draft. Can't wait to get back with my brothers this summer!" When reached by Blue & Gold Illustrated, Daniels' mother refused comment. The uni- versity also would not comment, citing privacy laws. Daniels became the fourth high-profile Fighting Irish student-athlete suspended during the 2013-14 school year because of academics. He joins quarterback Everett Golson, back at Notre Dame this semester after not being en- rolled during the fall; senior guard Jerian Grant, the leading scorer for men's basketball; and hockey player Robbie Russo (still enrolled and practicing with the team), one of the team's top defensemen. Daniels caught 49 passes for 745 yards (15.2 yards per reception) and seven touchdowns in 2013, all second to graduating senior TJ Jones. Minus Daniels this spring, the Irish receiving corps will be replete with inexperience. Current sophomore wide receiver Chris Brown has 17 career receptions, the most of any returning pass catcher. Although he was the starting quarterback in 2012, Golson enters 2014 spring drills having completed only two passes to current Irish re- ceivers: a 50-yard strike to Brown in the fourth quarter at Oklahoma to set up the go-ahead score in the 30-13 win, and a five-yard flip to tight end Ben Koyack during a 20-17 victory versus Purdue. Daniels, a junior wide receiver who caught 49 passes for 745 yards and seven touchdowns in 2013, will not be at Notre Dame this spring because of aca- demic reasons. PHOTO BY BILL PANZICA
