The university says faculty, students, university communi- cations, athletics and information tech- nology will use the facilities in what will make Notre Dame "a national leader in the digital media space in higher education." "At a time when so many would call into question the viability of the col- legiate sports model in America, it is fitting that Notre Dame, a perennial leader in the measures of academic performance by student-athletes, of- fers a bold vision providing emphatic evidence that the full integration of athletics into the academic mission of a university is not only possible but desirable," director of athletics Jack Swarbrick said in a statement. "Coach Brian Kelly and I are thrilled that one of the most famous sports venues in the world will now also be known as one of the most innovative educational facilities." In the 1990s, Notre Dame Stadium underwent a $50 million makeover that included the addition of more than 21,000 seats, a new natural grass field, two new scoreboards, permanent lights and the current press box.
