BY MICHAEL SPATH T he Michigan hockey team does not want the experi- ence of missing the NCAA Tournament to become fa- miliar, but after a second consecutive campaign without an NCAA berth the Maize and Blue have started a streak they want to end quickly. In March, U-M saw forwards Alex Guptill and Phil DiGiuseppe sign professional contracts, each voiding his final season of eligibility. Then in April, defensemen Mac Bennett and Kevin Clare, forwards Luke Moffatt and Derek DeBlois, and goalie Adam Janecyk became official departures when their senior seasons came to an end. The Wolverines lost plenty of talent and experience, but head coach Red Berenson does not look back, focusing only on the future and what he hopes will be a 2014-15 roster that leads U-M back to the NCAA Tournament. "I really like the leadership of next year 's team," he said. "I think they've learned a lot in the last cou- ple of years. We've lost some key players and some key people, but we have some players ready to step up and do a great job in that area. Play- ers coming in won't have to make an impact as much as last year's fresh- man class because the team going forward will be dependent a lot on our sophomores." U-M will have impact players in its rookie class, however, starting with center Dylan Larkin.
