PREP PROFILES Michigan has plucked a few top re- cruiting targets from South Carolina over the years, including NFL wide receiver Junior Hemingway (Kansas City), but a majority of the state's elite prospects stay closer to home. Many predict Sumter, S.C., run- ning back Ty'Son Williams will be the next to play his college ball in his home state. His current top four consists of both South Carolina and Clemson, while Notre Dame and Wisconsin are also on the short list. The Gamecocks might be his cur- rent favorite. "The football and fans stick out the most," Williams said. "They have a real football atmosphere. The fans get really crazy during the games. I just like Gamecock football." But he is open to others. He al- ready has plans to visit Notre Dame and Wisconsin, and if Michigan's going to have a shot the Wolver- ines will have to get him on cam- pus, too, to help him become more familiar with the school. He said in the spring that he only knew "a little bit" about the program. "I know they have the biggest stadium in the country and I know about [quarterback] Devin Gardner, but I don't know too much about them yet," he said. "I'll definitely look to find out more about them. "I'm interested in all of the schools that have offered me, because they're giving me a chance to go and play for them. I'll be looking more into them and talking to the coaches." Williams, a self described "shifty" runner, rushed for 1,516 yards and 16 touchdowns last year, averaging 8.7 yards per carry, after carrying for 1,008 yards and 17 scores as a sophomore. He helped lead Crest- wood to a 9-4 record and the round of 16 in the Class AAA playoffs last season. Next up on his agenda: learning how to run more downhill and be- coming more explosive with the ball. Several will be watching to see if he is successful. "A few schools that stick out are Notre Dame, Wisconsin, South Car- olina, and Clemson," Williams said of his top four April 30. "Those are the schools that frequently talk to me. I'm definitely going to make a decision before the season starts." Williams said he'd try to visit Michigan in the summer. — Chris Balas U-M Has Work To Do To Land South Carolina Back ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪ Crestwood High School Sumter, S.C.
