PREP PROFILES Miles Boykin will forgive you for thinking he's a tight end. He's got- ten used to it. The 6-4, 222-pounder even had several college coaches tell him that they see an interesting hy- brid player when they look at his film. In the end, though, Boykin considers himself a wide receiver — and a good one. "Most schools are talking about re- ceiver, and then the rest are hy- brids," he said. "I'd rather play receiver, but if my body grows I can't really do anything about that so I'm open to playing tight end, too." When Michigan joined Boykin's offer list in mid-April, U-M defensive backs coach and Chicago area recruiter Curt Mallory let him know that he'd have the opportunity to play his preferred position should he choose to become a Wolverine. That's a wel come sound for the player ranked No. 10 among wide receivers and No. 114 overall in the nation, according to Rivals.com. "He just told me that, being a sec- ondary coach, he wouldn't want to have to try and cover me," Boykin ex- plained. "That's when he gave me the offer. He just told me that they were offering as a wide receiver." Michigan's offer doesn't guaran- tee a commit, of course. In fact, there may be a bit of an uphill battle when it comes to swaying Boykin. Among his dozen-plus opportunities are of- fers from Michigan State, Notre Dame, Florida and Ohio State. USC, Texas and other name-brand programs are among those showing interest but have yet to offer. With his list already growing un- wieldy, Boykin plans to make a cut to 10 contenders during the summer. A spring game visit to Ann Ar- bor — before he picked up the Michigan offer — keeps U-M in the mix, but only three schools will be guaranteed to make the next cut. "Next up for me is just making a top 10 at the end of the spring re- cruiting period," Boykin explained. "I know Illinois, Michigan State and Notre Dame will be in there. Other schools will have to show me their sit- uation: that I'll have a chance to come in and play early." Now that he has a Michigan offer in hand, Boykin plans to make a return trip from the Chicago area to get a fresh look at campus. He's staying in touch with both Mallory and wideouts coach Jeff Hecklinski, and both would love to add another Devin Funchess type to the receiving corps. — Tim Sullivan Big Wideout Likes Michigan ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪ Providence Catholic School New Lenox, Ill.
