FROM OUR READERS tain Jim Conley, Rick Sygar, Bill Las- key, Charlie Kines, Gerry Mader and the aforementioned Brian Patchen. And so was the head coach, Bump Elliott. On many a weeknight the players would continue game prep- arations in the hallways, including Brian Patchen practicing his long snaps. I recall Jim Conley spraining his knee, being in a great deal of pain, but forbidding anyone to call the trainer or even mention it. He was one tough guy who had to be taped together to play. No surprise he was the captain. There might have been a few more talented teams in 1964, but there wasn't a better one. Thanks for bring- ing back the memories from the pre- Schembechler era. Jon March Grand Rapids, Mich. Thanks, Jon. It was a team well worth the look back. Jim Conley (left) was the captain on head coach Bump Elliott's 1964 squad, which went 9-1 and won the Big Ten championship. PHOTO COURTESY MICHIGAN ATHLETIC MEDIA RELATIONS
