Senior fullback Wayne "The Train"
Bullock tallies the game winner from
a yard out with 3:08 left in the 10‑3
victory. During the game, head coach
Ara Parseghian is hit with back‑to‑back
15‑yard penalties. The first was for go‑
ing beyond the restricted 30‑yard area
for coaches when he asked an official
for a clarification on a previous penalty.
The second came for his blue language
after that call.
Parseghian often told a player after
a penalty, "You aren't worth 15 yards
to this football team." The next day at
the staff meeting, linebackers coach
George Kelly had the courage to say
jokingly, "Coach, you aren't worth 30
yards to this football team."

No. 1 Notre Dame extends its win‑
ning streak to 17 games with a 27‑17
victory at Stanford.
First‑year Cardinal head coach Den‑
nis Green has quarterback Steve Smith
pass 68 times, with his 39 completions
—both still records by a Notre Dame
opponent — totaling 282 yards.
The strategy helps keep the 1‑4 Car‑
dinal competitive and it ties the score
at 14 in the third quarter on an Ed McCaffrey touchdown catch, followed by a two‑point run by fullback
Tommy Vardell. Notre Dame sophomore Raghib "Rocket" Ismail then returns the ensuing kickoff 66 yards
to the Stanford 16, setting up the go‑ahead TD run by fullback Anthony Johnson.
Stanford has only one penalty while Notre Dame is called for eight totaling 75 yards. Several times Irish
defensive linemen are tackled during the pass‑a‑thon, but only once is Stanford called for holding — and
that is declined because the third‑down pass falls incomplete.
