FAN FORUM THE DRAW ON DREW I applaud the decision to seek out Drew Mahalic (Oct. 6 Blue & Gold Illustrated), who made what I believe to be the single greatest defensive play I've ever seen, live or on television. It was in the freakiest, strangest, most peculiar football game in the Notre Dame-USC series, in 1974. To this day I still believe the Los Angeles Rams put on USC jerseys to play the second half. Notre Dame led 24-6 at the half, and Anthony Davis ran back the second- half kickoff. USC went for two to get the deficit to 10. The call was a rollout quarterback sweep to the right corner flag, with Pat Haden carrying the ball. Haden had two of his own mastodons in front of him, and only Mike Fanning bearing down on him for Notre Dame. FROM THE WEBSITE The Oct. 1 instagram message from Notre Dame junior cornerback KeiVarae Russell, currently sidelined because of an academic investigation, had nearly 20,000 views in the 24 hours on BlueandGold.com's message board. It elicited dozens of reactions as well: Zackie: I can see both sides of this episode. In today's world, people laugh at integrity when it comes to a school that holds a degree above the success of an athletic team. Notre Dame, to its credit, reported all of this. A school that did not care about academics could and would have swept this under the rug. Now, we are damning Notre Dame for having the "integrity" of investigating an impropriety. A university must investigate and follow protocol to come to a conclusion. One has to look no further than the quarterback of this team to find an example of the academic seriousness of this episode. A one-year dismissal later, Everett Golson has turned something very bad into something the university should be proud of. Instead of running away, he faced it head on and hopefully, has learned a valuable lesson. Is there a class at the university that can teach that? On the other hand, I agree that this episode has taken a little longer than it should have. I just hope the five can learn from all of this instead of spinning it to make themselves look good and the university look bad. 19BlueandGold85: What I don't agree with is even after all the hearings are concluded and decisions are reached they won't immediately know. So even if proven innocent they could be out until the FSU game. At this point I wouldn't be afraid to call those in charge of this mess incompetent. Egastro2: In this country someone is innocent until proven guilty. I can understand holding these players out of games because you do not want to have to vacate wins if they are later deemed ineligible. Holding them out of meetings and not allowing them to practice hurt the player and the team. These are experienced upperclassmen and their presence in practice would be helpful to the younger players. If they are eventually cleared they can then step right back in — assuming they have kept their position — and the bitterness and resentment would be far less. When this is over the administration will need to evaluate the "process" and fix it so fingers are not pointed in every direction. Want to stay up-to-date with all the Irish news?
