Recruiting Notes With the recruiting process moving much faster these days, Notre Dame has already extended 48 scholarship offers to recruits from the class of 2016. Blue & Gold Illustrated takes a look at two junior prospects that hold offers from the Irish. • There is potential for Notre Dame to recruit the state of Ohio extremely successfully in the class of 2016, and Cleveland Benedictine four-star wide receiver Justin Layne could be a part of that. The 6-3, 180-pound prospect picked up an offer from the Irish Sept. 18 and told 247Sports national director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong that the tender came as a shock. "I was surprised," Layne said. "I wasn't aware they were interested in me like that, so when they came to my school it surprised me." Notre Dame joins Florida, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State and many others that have offered. The belief surrounding Layne's recruitment is that he will stay somewhat close to home, with the major players being Ohio State, Michigan State and Notre Dame. All three schools will make him a major prior- ity going forward. Per the 247Sports Crystal Ball, which allows recruiting analysts to make predictions on where prospects will end up, the Buckeyes are the heavy favorite. Of the 13 predictions on his profile, 11 have him choosing to play for Ohio State and only two believe he will end up at Michigan State. Layne is the No. 98 overall player in the nation, the No. 21 wide receiver in the land and the No. 7 prospect in Ohio according to 247Sports.
