ND SPORTS Jake Evans, and goaltender Cal Pe- tersen — when asked who will need to contribute this season. Hurley, Bjork, Evans and Cook (in that order) will need to find the back of the net. Gross and Ripley will likely be on back lines from the season's outset. Petersen will compete for the starting goalie spot with sophomore Chad Katunar. "All the freshmen are capable," Jackson said. "Some of them are pro- jected to be a little bit more projects that we recruited to fill specific roles. … They're going to have to do it in key situations." Many of those key situations will come in Hockey East play, which Notre Dame begins Nov. 1 at Vermont. Last year 's up-and-down team fin- ished 9-9-2 in conference play. New opponents, new venues and new schemes prevented a talented Irish squad from finding its stride. Ac- cording to Jackson, at times even the coaches struggled adapting to the new conference. "We watched all the film we could last year, but as soon as we get on the ice with a team, every week, it was like we were surprised," Jackson said. "As coaches, as players, there was a little element of surprise in how the op- ponent played us or how they played the game." The media seems to expect Notre Dame to have similar struggles this season, placing Jackson's squad sev- enth out of 12 teams, while the league preseason coaches poll slotted the Irish third. ✦ 1-800-421-7751 • www.BlueGoldOnline.com Notre Dame "Eglomise" Framed Print $59.95 FREE S&H* Notre Dame "Eglomise" style digital photos reproduce the transparency effect of an image reverse-painted on glass.
