UNDER THE DOME Judge Favors Notre Dame In ESPN Suit On April 20, St. Joseph Superior Court Judge Steven Hostetler ruled a ver- dict in favor of Notre Dame after ESPN had filed a lawsuit against the school this winter regarding access to campus police records. Last Oct. 8, ESPN reporter Paula Lavigne requested records from the Notre Dame Security Police (NDSP) regarding reports on Fighting Irish student- athletes on two separate incidents. When she was denied, Lavigne filed a CHARTING THE IRISH DIRECTORS' CUP STANDINGS In the post-winter Division I standings of the Directors' Cup — a program that recognizes schools achieving athletic success in all sports — Notre Dame ranks ninth with 601.50 total points, trailing only Texas (614.00,) Florida (633.00,) Ohio State (700.50,) UCLA (731.25,) Wisconsin (748.50,) North Carolina (823.50,) Penn State (859.00,) and perennial champion Stanford (1,101.50). The sports that earned the most for the Irish this winter were women's basketball (90 points, NCAA runners-up), fencing (85 points, third at the NCAA Championships) and men's basketball (73 points, advanced to the Elite Eight). Women's swimming also picked up 53 points with a 21st-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Notre Dame could still pick up some ground in the standings in the spring. Men's lacrosse is ranked No. 2 nationally and will finish the season at worst in the national semifinals. Rowing, softball and women's track & field were all ranked in the top 25 nationally as of May 14. Their 383.50 points this winter are comparable to the winter in 2011-12, when the Irish picked up 397.50 points — the program's best winter total since 2010. That season women's basketball was na- tional runner-up again while fencing finished third, plus men's track & field was 12th, women's swimming placed 22nd and men's swimming finished 28th.
