UPON FURTHER REVIEW TODD D. BURLAGE is negligible since this is a road game for Notre Dame. Virginia opens the sea- son Sept. 5 with a cross-country trip to UCLA before hosting the Irish the fol- lowing weekend. SEPT. 19 VS. GEORGIA TECH While Notre Dame opens the sea- son with two Power Five opponents in Texas and Virginia, the Orange Bowl champion Yellow Jackets — with their difficult-to-defend triple-option offense — open with tune-up games against Alcorn State and Tulane before traveling to South Bend. OCT. 3 AT CLEMSON The ACC Championship contender plays at Louisville on a Thursday night (Sept. 17) and then enjoys a bye week before hosting Notre Dame. In all, the Tigers will have 15 days to solely con- centrate and game plan for the Irish. NOV. 7 AT PITTSBURGH Like USC, the Panthers will also en- joy some extra preparation time before playing Notre Dame. Under first-year head coach Pat Narduzzi, Pittsburgh hosts North Carolina on a Thursday night (Oct. 29) before enjoying eight full days to prepare for and await the Irish arrival. NOV. 14 VS. WAKE FOREST The Irish should be a prohibitive fa- vorite, but the Demon Deacons will travel to Notre Dame fresh off of a bye. This game was actually scheduled for 2014, but had to be moved back a year to help alleviate some Notre Dame scheduling conflicts. NOV. 21 VS. BOSTON COLLEGE (AT FENWAY PARK) The Eagles will also have a bye week before meeting Notre Dame at the leg- endary home of the Boston Red Sox as part of the Shamrock Series, giving BC plenty of extra prep time in their hometown. Building around Notre Dame's inde- pendence and existing opponent com- mitments always creates additional scheduling challenges. But it's hard not to wonder if a polarizing Notre Dame football program that enjoys the full allotment of lucrative ACC bowl tie-ins might have created some resentment when it joined the league as only a part-time member. ✦ Todd D.
