MICHIGAN BASKETBALL and right now you can see the effect has been terrific. They're hungry. But we make no mistake about it and say, 'We're not close.' "We have a lot of gap to make up with this young team. But without question, now that we look back on it, it was very beneficial for all of us, including the coaching staff." LeVert and Walton are healthy now. Junior wing Zak Irvin, who un- derwent a back procedure this fall, is expected back early in the season. Se- nior guard Spike Albrecht, who un- derwent separate surgeries on each of his hips in the offseason, is now cleared to practice. They'll join a cast of sophomores who gained invaluable experience last year, along with a couple of key newcomers. The expectation is to make big strides, and Beilein stressed there are strides to be made. He also expects the chemistry on the team to be great, but noted it will take some adjustment. "Some of these young men will probably have to move back in their minutes and get comfortable with a 5-, 10-, 15-, 20-minute slot, and some of those same young men might be in the 30-, 35-minute slot," Beilein said. "We're going to determine that, but it is great to have depth. It gives you all kinds of choices. Sometimes that's tough, too. "We're trying to still figure things out, and we're really looking at these six weeks of preseason as a time to try and figure it out, and then start the season. We still don't have all the answers. We try to evolve during the season as well." Just staying healthier would pro- vide some answers, noted U-M as- sistant coach LaVall Jordan.
