WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
ships and came within five points of
a third, before Baston returned to the
states, where he played for the Indiana
Pacers and Raptors once again.
He'd didn't count solely on bas-
ketball, though, having taken a crash
course in business at Northwestern
University while with Toronto.
Instructed in an NBA Players As-
sociation seminar that for every 15
players, 10 would be broke four years
after ending their careers, Baston did
something about it. He's still reaping
sweet results.
He and two other Michigan grads
founded Taste Love Cupcakes, using
the recipe his business partner Mi-
chelle Brown followed. The Royal Oak,
Mich., business won TV's "Cupcake
Wars" in 2012, after being in operation
only a year.
"This was my own team, and we
had won a national event," Baston re-
called. "It filled the void of not playing
anymore."
Baston, retired from basketball since
2011, also renewed acquaintances with
some high-profile Italians who fondly
remembered his time there. Form Ita-
lia, company that he has developed a
relationship with, partners with Lam-
borghini, Mercedes, Aston Martin and
Gucci.
"My next venture is trying to bring
the Mercedes-Benz furniture line to
the U.S.," Baston said. "It's a new busi-
ness. That worked out from playing
in Italy."
Much has worked out, and he still
traces it all back to four years spent
around the favored school of his
childhood. ❏
