you put 115 players together, they all come into college with different talent levels, attitudes, coaching and work ethic. Football in college comes down to what you do at this level. The best players play. "So much of football is technique and film study, knowing your responsibly and executing with perfect fundamen- tals, and while you might not be able to overcome the better athlete that also does all those things well, you usually will overcome the better ath- lete that doesn't do all those things." Among the walk-on starters, safety Jordan Kovacs (2009-12) rose up to become the recipient of the Bo Schem- bechler Most Valuable Player award in 2012, while Eric Mayes (1997), Mark Moundros (2010), Kovacs (2012) and Joe Kerridge (2015) were voted cap- tains by their teammates. " There is an immense pride and sense of accomplishment in what walk-ons have done at Michigan," said Heininger. "It's not a fluke and it's not a surprise.
