best chance of any Wolverine to win an individual national championship this season. MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD LOOKS TO IMPROVE ON LAST SEASON Head coach Jerry Clayton is in his third year at Michigan and hopes to recreate the success he had in year two when U-M placed fifth at the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Champi- onships — Michigan's first top-five conference finish since 2009 (second place). Clayton returns nine athletes that scored at last year 's indoor confer- ence meet, including fifth-year senior Mason Ferlic (5,000-meter run, first place), redshirt junior Chris Maye (60-meter dash, first place), fifth-year senior Codie Nolan (60-meter dash, second place) and redshirt junior Ste- ven Bastien (heptathlon, fifth place). Michigan began its season Dec. 4 at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open, with three Wolverines — red- shirt freshman Joseph Ellis (19.89 me- ters), redshirt sophomore Grant Cart- wright (18.35 meters) and fifth-year senior Derek Sievers (17.29) — set- ting personal records in the weight throw. The Wolverines will compete at the Doug Raymond Invitational Jan. 9 and 11 more meets leading up to the Big Ten Indoor Championships Feb. 26-27. ❏ Must-See Events Jan. 9, 2016 — Wrestling at Ohio State: Michigan will travel to Columbus, Ohio, to face defending NCAA champion Ohio State (the match will be tele- vised live on the Big Ten Network). After Michigan dominated the series for decades, the Buckeyes have had the upper hand of late, claiming six of the last eight meetings, including a 25-15 decision last season in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines won in their last trip to Columbus, however, and will look to repeat the feat this season. Jan. 23 and Jan. 30, 2016 — Men's Gymnastics vs. Ohio State, and vs. Oklahoma: This must-see event is a two-for-one special. U-M will host pre- season No. 1 Oklahoma Jan. 23, and follow that meet with a matchup against No. 2 Ohio State Jan. 30 in a meet that will be televised by the Big Ten Network. Jan. 31, 2016 — Wrestling at Penn State: Penn State, a three-time NCAA champion from 2012-14, was ranked as the nation's top team in mid-December. Michigan has dropped five straight against the Nittany Lions, including a frus- trating 19-15 decision at home last season. Feb. 5-6, 2016 — Women's Track And Field at Notre Dame Meyo Invi- tational: The Wolverines will travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Meyo Invitational, an event with plenty of tradition. The women will be led by distance runner Erin Finn and will compete in the famous "Meyo Mile," which attracts elite runners from across the country.
