INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS 10 YEARS AGO, 2006: Michigan welcomed No. 11 Michigan State into Crisler Arena, but proved anything but welcoming in the end. The Wolverines won 72-67, rallying from seven points down at the half to secure the victory. Senior guard Daniel Horton led the way, pouring in 23 points on the strength of three triples and an 8-of-8 effort from the free throw line. Senior forward Chris Hunter supplied a huge second-half spark, scoring all 13 of his points over the final 20 minutes of play. The Wolverines fell behind by nine, 41-32, during the first few seconds of the final half, but scrambled back to take the lead on a Hunter three-pointer. His rare deep ball put Michigan up 48-45 with 11:14 remaining in the game. U-M never trailed again, moving to 14-3 on the season. Tommy Amaker's crew went on to reach the NIT championship game that sea- son. 25 Years Ago, 1991: Michigan suffered a disappointment or two during Gary Moeller's first season as head football coach in 1990, but on Jan. 1, 1991, the Wolverines took out a lot of frustrations. They pummeled Mississippi in the Gator Bowl, 35-3, behind an overwhelming offensive attack. The Wolverines rushed for 391 yards and passed for 324 more, a performance so domi- nant that U-M's offensive linemen shared the game's MVP trophy. They featured a pair of 100-yard rushers, Jon Vaughn going for 128 and Ricky Powers adding 112. Meanwhile, quarterback Elvis Grbac carved up Mississippi to the tune of 296 passing yards with four touchdowns. Desmond Howard found himself on the receiving end of six passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns. The Wolverines finished up 9-3 and No. 7 in the Associated Press poll, after starting the year 3-3. "After 3-3, things could have gone sour," Moeller acknowledged. "It was my responsibility to not let that happen." — John Borton THIS MONTH IN MICHIGAN ATHLETICS HISTORY S e n i o r f o r w a r d C h r i s H u n t e r scored all 13 of his points in the second half, helping Michigan to a 72-67 win over No. 11 Michigan State on Jan. 25, 2006.
