INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MICHIGAN'S TOP OLYMPIC SPORTS PERFORMERS Baseball junior Harrison Wenson: Playing catcher and DH this season, Wenson led the 11-3 Wolverines in bat- ting average (.404), home runs (three), RBI (14), slugging percentage (.660) and on-base percentage (.466) through March 14. In U-M's four-game sweep at Hawaii March 10-12, the 6-3, 235-pounder was 6 of 14 (.429) at the plate with two runs scored and four runs batted in. Women's gymnastics freshman Olivia Karas: With junior Nicole Artz shelved for competition, Karas delivered for the Wolverines at the Big Five Meet between U-M, Penn State, Minnesota, Iowa and Rutgers March 12. Karas posted the top score on the vault (9.950) and floor exercise (9.925), and with strong efforts on balance beam (fifth) and uneven parallel bars (fifth) recorded the top all-around score of the night (39.625). Softball junior Abby Ramirez: The Chicago native has continued her upward trajectory at the plate, improving her batting average by more than 40 points from last sea- son, hitting .413 in 22 games through March 14. Michigan's starting shortstop, Ramirez was second on the team in hits (26), second in on-base percentage (.536) and third in runs scored (29) while posting a .922 fielding percentage. Men's golf junior Tom Swanson: The Missoula, Mont., na- tive helped Michigan to a second-place finish at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate March 5-6, carding a three-round, 4-under-par 212 to place seventh individually. Swanson set both a career-best 54-hole score, beating his previous mark by six strokes, and a career-best round with a 2-under 70. Women's golf sophomore Emily White: White tied for the fourth-best single round by a Wolverine this year with a 4-under-par 67 in the second round at the Hurricane Invita- tional Feb. 29-March 2. The sophomore shot 3-over 216 for the three-round tournament, lifting Michigan to seventh. She now has four rounds under par this season and is av- eraging 73.36 strokes per round — more than four strokes below last year.
