"To win the MAC Championship Game with a new coach and new coaching staff, and a bunch of young players, that was a pretty big deal," he said of the coach's first season on campus. "What makes him such a great coach is not only his philosophies, but he is such a great player's coach. "Any guy who had him will tell you that. He has your back no matter what and is one of the guys sometimes." "Paying Rent" Yow called what Doeren faces at NC State a "rebuilding project," and there is plenty of work to be done in order to reach her goals of top-25 finishes and ACC championships. The coach knows the task won't be easy, but he's looking forward to scaling that mountain, nonetheless. As he used to tell his players at Wisconsin, according to former All-Big Ten safety Aaron Henry, "Success is not owned, it's rented, and rent is due every day." "He never knows how to stop working," said Jaevery McFadden, a linebacker who played for Doeren at Wisconsin. "He is always watching film and trying to find something else to do. I really don't know how he did it. NC State is going to have a great coach; he's a great motivator and a great recruiter. "Winning back-to-back championships in the MAC is no slouch. I definitely kind of saw it coming. You have to have good players to win, but a good coach can get the most out of his players. That is what Coach Doeren does. His players are ready and prepared for every game, and that is half the battle. He's going to be a good look for NC State." Doeren knows that building a program in Raleigh will start with recruiting, and he is familiar with that side of the business having served as recruiting coordinator in eight of his 18 years in college football at three different schools. He recruited former Heisman Trophy finalist Montee Ball to Wisconsin, among several other college stars. He also knows how to win once his players get on campus — he mentored NFL star defensive end J.J. Watt, who ranked second in the NFL with 16.5 sacks through 12 games this fall, in both of his seasons at Madison, and the coach has been a part of 12 postseason trips and six conference championships. Teams with Doeren on the staff have gone 157-69-1 during his college coaching career, and he looks to bring that same success to his newest home. He'll do that by doing what he has told his players is required daily — paying rent. "That's something I've always prided myself in. Our staff and our team will show that demeanor when they play and when they work. "Championships are earned. There is no 'ifs,' 'ands' or 'buts,' about it. This school has been in 25 bowl games, going on 26, and I know the goal is to be in those bowls in January."
