30 ■ THE WOLFPACKER TRACKING THE PACK wolfpacker spotlight BROCK DEATHERAGE Senior • Baseball Brock Deatherage earned the opportunity to be a high pick in the 2018 MLB Draft by hitting .307 with 14 home runs and 41 runs batted in as a senior for the Wolfpack. He also led NC State with 18 stolen bases. Deatherage had gambled when he passed up signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2017 after he was selected in the 29th round. His strong senior campaign elevated him to the 10th round this past June, where he was picked by the Detroit Tigers. The Burlington, N.C., native came out swinging in the Gulf Coast Rookie League, connecting on three solo home runs in his first professional game. His three-homer performance was the first such effort by a hitter in the Gulf Coast League in seven years. He then followed it up by hitting a grand slam in game two. That earned Deatherage a quick promotion to Class-A West Michigan in the Midwest League. Deatherage was one of a school-record four players picked in the first 10 rounds of the MLB Draft. The others were junior outfielder Brett Kinneman (seventh round, Pittsburgh Pirates), senior left-handed pitcher Brian Brown (ninth round, Boston Red Sox) and senior outfielder Josh McLain (ninth round, Los Angeles Dodgers). — Matt Carter/Photo by Larry Blankenship
