the third extra session. We were done in regulation, and in the first and second over time, McGraw ac knowledged. We just kept pounding away just unbelievable. I cant even put into words Im so proud of this team. With the win, Notre Dame won its second consecutive outright Big East title. Its per fect 16-0 league record made it the first Big East school other than Connecticut to run the table in league play since 2005-06 (Rutgers) and just the third ever (the other being Miami, 18-0 in 1991-92). One For The Record Books With its 75-66 victory against South Florida in the quarterfinals of the Big East Championship March10, the Notre Dame womens basketball program set a new standard for itself in consecutive wins. During its run to the 2001 national title, head coach Muffet McGraws Fighting Irish won 23 straight prior to losing to Connecticut in the Big East Championship final. That defeat was avenged in the Final Four. The day after knocking off the Bulls, Notre Dame extended the streak to 24 with an 83-59 rout of No.16 Louisville. Blue & Gold Illustrated went to press March 12, prior to the Big East Championship finale versus No. 3 UConn. Will an Irish womens team in the future eclipse the 2012-13 all-time winning streak? The chances seem remote given how difficult it is to string together 20 wins in any team sport, never mind 25. Here are some other notable all-time winning streaks by different sports at Notre Dame: Mens Fencing 122 from 1975-80 Head coach Mike DeCiccos Irish won the national titles in 1977 and 1978. This is a unique circumstance though because while dual meets are counted as wins, the NCAA Tournament is more about individual titles adding up to a team victory. Womens Fencing 89 from 2009-11 Same principal as mens fencing. Womens Softball 33 in 2001 During this winning streak from March 28 to May 1, Notre Dame reached an all-time high No. 7 in the national rankings. It finished 54-7 while capturing the Big East title. Mens Tennis 29 in 1965-67 The program won national titles in 1944 and 1959, but this was the longest winning streak under head coach Tom Fallon. Womens Soccer 26 in 2008 They were the 2007 New England Patriots of womens soccer, posting a perfect 26-0 mark before losing the national title game to archrival North Carolina. Football 23 in 1988-89 Especially notable is seven of the victories were against top-10 foes. Notre Dame had a 39-game unbeaten streak from 1946-50, but there were also two ties: Army (0-0) in 1946 and USC (14-14) in 1948. Baseball 23 in 2006 Head coach Paul Mainieris final season before accepting the LSU post saw the Irish match the football standard during this stretch from March 26 to April 25. Mens Basketball 18 in 1953-54 Led by All-Americans Dick Rosenthal and Jack Stephens, the Irish began their streak with a 52-50 win against Northwestern Dec. 31 and it reached 18 on March 12 with an upset of No. 1 and defending national champ Indiana in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Picked to win it all after defeating the Hoosiers, Notre Dame lost the next day in the Elite Eight to Penn State, 71-63 (their version of Boston College, 1993). Lou Somogyi
