inside michigan athletics Michigan's Top Olympic Sports Performers Men's cross county runner Zach Ornelas: The 2013 Michigan grad placed second at the USA Mountain Running Championships July 21, earning a spot on Team USA for the World Mountain Running Championships Sept. 8 in Poland. A two-time NCAA Championships participant, Ornelas clocked 1:01.23 on the 12-kilometer course (three 4,000-meter loops) on the Cranmore Mountain in Orth Conway, N.H. Women's golf sophomore Catherine Peters: After starting six tournaments in 2012-13, Peters is on the cusp of a breakout year, showing off her skill in winning the Women's Buffalo District Golf Association Championship Aug. 2. The Clarence, N.Y., native set the Springville Country Club course record with a five-under-par 66 on the second day after shooting a 71 on day one. Her six-under 136 provided an 11-shot margin of victory over the runner-up. Men's soccer senior Fabio Pereira: The Brazil native is expected to have a big 2013 season, earning a first-team accolade on TopDrawerSoccer.com's Preseason Best XI squad. Pereira has led the Wolverines in scoring each of the past two seasons, accumulating 13 points in 2011 and a career-high 20 points in 2012, hitting the back of the net six times during his junior year. He ranks ninth all time at U-M with 40 points, fourth with 18 assists and 10th with 11 goals. Women's soccer senior Nkem Ezurike: The Nova Scotia native has been named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Preseason Best XI third team, one of three Big Ten players included among the teams. Fourth all time at Michigan in goals (35), Ezurike needs just 10 this year — a figure she reached in 2011 (11) and 2012 (15) — to take over first place from alumnus Kacy Beitel (1997-200). Ezurike also ranks fourth in the U-M annals in points with 80, needing 37 to reach No. 1. Women's tennis juniors Kristen Dodge and Sarah Lee: Partners in 2012 (going 9-12 overall), Dodge and Lee found incredible chemistry at the Bloomington Midwest ITA Summer Circuit July 27-29, winning four matches to claim the doubles title. The two earned 8-2 and 8-4 wins in their first two contests, then bested top-four seeds Kayla Fujimoto and Alecia Krauss of Indiana 8-6 in the semis before knocking off Cornell's top-four seed of Alex D'Ascenzo and Marika Cusik 8-4 in the championship match.
