inside michigan athletics • Sophomore forward Andrew Copp and incoming forwards J.T. Compher and Tyler Motte have made the initial cut for a spot on the U.S. World Junior Championships roster. The final roster will be announced following a pre-tournament camp Dec. 15-18. Medalists • Senior swimmer Connor Jaeger earned a bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2013 FINA World Championships July 28. The Fair Haven, N.J., native improved upon his seventh-place preliminaries finish by three seconds to clock a 3:44.85 in the finals. "I might have gotten third, but it felt like I won," Jaeger said. Michigan alums Tyler Clary (2008-10) and Charlie Houchin (2007-10) also took home medals at the World Championships. Houchin helped Team USA to a gold medal in the 4x200-meter freestyle (7:01.72) while Clary placed third in the 200-meter backstroke (1:54.64) to earn a bronze medal. Study Abroad • The Michigan women's basketball team will play practice games in France and Italy Aug. 19-30. U-M will participate in contests Aug. 23 in Paris, Aug. 24 in Como and Aug. 27 in Rome. "We are very excited to have the opportunity to take a foreign trip," head coach Kim Barnes Arico said. "It is a great chance for our team to get a head start on the upcoming season while seeing a completely different part of the world. The extra practice time, especially with four newcomers and four players coming off of knee injuries, will be invaluable for our young team. "We are grateful for the generosity of Nancy Lohr, who donated the money for us to take this trip. As we continue to build our program, supporters like Nancy are integral to our success." Hired • Water polo head coach Matt Anderson has hired Ryan Castle to serve in the role of assistant coach, a position he occupied previously at Hartwick (2011-13) and Arizona State (2007-10). "We are very excited to have Ryan join us at Michigan," Anderson said. "He brings a lot of great attributes to our program — both in and out of the pool. He has a good amount of college coaching experience, and I particularly like that he has been in our conference. Our players have seen him around and are familiar with him. "With his recruiting capabilities, knowledge of the game and experience within the college game, it's going to help us make a seamless transition and continue to move our program forward."
