INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Michigan basketball is about to em- bark on its biggest road trip of the sea- son: 10 days in Italy, Aug. 15-24, for a four-game exhibition slate. The excur- sion will benefit a very young U-M team in a number of ways, head coach John Beilein noted. "This trip would not have been pos- sible without the generosity of our do- nors as well as the athletic department," Beilein said. "We are fortunate to have this opportunity to improve our team's growth and chemistry while still experi- encing a foreign trip. "It's a great opportunity for our young men to get a chance to learn a different culture, visit historical sites, bond as a team and play some quality compe- tition. We learned and experienced a great deal from our Belgium trip four years ago and we look forward to hav- ing more memorable moments." The trip includes stops in Rome, Ve- rona, Vicenza, Venice and Lake Como, along with red-circled itinerary stops at the Vatican, the Colosseum, the Fo- rum and the Spanish Steps. Michigan also plans to make an Aug. 20 visit to the United States Army base in Vicenza (which houses U.S. soldiers, including the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team and 509th Signal Battalion). "The visit to the Army Garrison is go- ing to be a special for us," Beilein said. "Any time we can give back, visit and speak with servicemen and women, it is a life-changing experience." On the basketball side, the schedule is as follows: Game 1: Sunday, Aug. 17 vs. Perugia Select Team, Rome, Italy (Stella Azzura), 6 p.m. CEST Game 2: Tuesday, Aug. 19 vs. Vicenza All-Stars, Vicenza, Italy (Palazzetto dello Sport), 8:30 p.m. CEST Game 3: Wednesday, Aug. 20 vs. Oderzo All-Stars, Vicenza, Italy (Pala- zzetto dello Sport), 8:30 p.m., CEST Game 4: Friday, Aug. 22 vs. Mantova Stings, Poggio Rusco, Italy (Palazzetto dello Sport), 7 p.m. CEST Note: Central European Summer Time (CEST ) is six hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) THEWOLVERINE.COM POLL RESULTS Each month, TheWolverine.com runs a new poll for its readers to vote on.
