UNDER THE DOME 85 Years Ago: Oct. 12, 1929 Notre Dame rallies to win 14‑7 against Navy in Baltimore without head coach Knute Rockne on the sidelines. In the opener a week earlier at Indiana, Rockne is smashed into on a play near the sidelines, and phlebitis sets in on his leg, which almost ends up costing him his life. With Rockne listening at home on his radio, Notre Dame falls behind 7‑0 in the first quarter, but ties the score at halftime on an 11‑yard pass from quarterback Frank Carideo to speedster Jack Elder. Then, early in the fourth quarter, Carideo intercepts a pass and returns it to the Navy 32 to set up Larry "Moon" Mullins' one‑yard scoring run for the game winner. 50 Years Ago: Oct. 10, 1964 Notre Dame plays in the state of Colorado for the first time, marking its first meeting with the Air Force Academy, which opened its doors in 1954 and hired Buck Shaw — an All‑American at Notre Dame under Knute Rockne — as its first football coach in 1956. The Irish fall behind 7‑0 when quarterback John Huarte throws a pick‑six, but Huarte responds by running for two scores and passing for two more, to Bill Wolski and Jack Snow, in a 34‑7 victory. 40 Years Ago: Oct. 12, 1974 With the score tied 3‑3 against heavy underdog Rice, Notre Dame takes possession at its 20 with 12:53 left in the game and begins one of the longest marches in the program's history: 80 yards and 20 plays that take 9:45 off the clock. Anniversaries In Notre Dame Athletics History: Oct. 7-13
