The NHL INJURY SIDELINES ROOKIE ZACH WERENSKI Rookie defenseman Zach Weren- ski's season came to an end in grue- some fashion April 16 in Columbus' first-round playoff loss to Pittsburgh. Werenski took a second-period shot to the face, suffering a fracture and a huge cut … and still played 19:08. He played the third period with a shield, but was forced to sit in over- time when the swelling got too tough to overcome. Blue Jackets head coach John Tor- torella complimented Werenski for playing through the injury after the game. Earlier, the veteran coach had said his rookie "is on a fast-track path to be one of the mainstays in this league." Werenski will still likely be a final- ist for the Calder Trophy, which is given annually to the league's top rookie. He finished with 11 goals and 47 points, tops among Columbus de- fensemen and all rookie blue liners. He averaged 20:56 of ice time per game during the regular season, and only Toronto's William Nylander (26) had more power play points than Werenski (21). Werenski's 36 assists ranked No. 2 on the team.
