The MLB RICH HILL SENT TO THE DISABLED LIST Blisters don't sound like the worst injuries a Major League Baseball player can suffer, but for pitchers they're among the most difficult to deal with. Former Michigan stand- out and current Los Angeles Dodgers starter Rich Hill has found that out the hard way the last two years. Hill, who was at U-M from 2000- 02, left an April 16 game after a blis- ter popped open while he was tak- ing practice swings in the on-deck circle. The injury landed him on the 10-day disabled list, his second stint this year. "Every time he takes the mound, the uncertainty is tough on every- body," Dodgers manager Dave Rob- erts told USA Today after using five relievers to fill in for Hill, who only lasted three innings. The Dodgers reportedly knew Hill had trouble with blisters in the weeks before they acquired him in a trade with Oakland on Aug. 1, 2016, giv- ing him extra time to recover before he made his Los Angeles debut Aug. 24. Hill was 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 76 innings before the injury surfaced. "It adds to the frustration that we have been able to do some great things with medicine, but this one is eluding us," Oakland general man- ager David Forst said last year of not being able to find a remedy. "There's just no timetable or guide- book as to how do deal with these things, because every one is different. "With most injuries you can ac- tively do something to rehab, and this is one where you just have to leave it alone long enough for it to heal." Hill was just as frustrated. "There's got to be some kind of medical miracle out there — like a glue or something — that can keep it covered where it won't blister again," Hill told news reporters after his lat- est setback. Hill stood 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA and seven strikeouts in eight innings pitched for the 7-7 Dodgers as of April 17. MLB NOTES • Former Michigan pitcher Zach Put- nam (2006-08) got off to a great start in Chicago, allowing no runs and only two hits in seven innings over five relief ap- pearances as of April 17. He'd notched eight strikeouts and picked up a hold for the 6-6 White Sox. • Another former U-M hurler, lefty Clayton Richard, was also pitching well. He stood 1-2 for the 5-9 Padres as of April 17, had struck out 10 in his three starts and boasted an ERA of 3.60. ❏ Trey Burke • NBA Burke was a healthy scratch from about March 28 on in Washing- ton, now the team's third point guard, but he scored 27 points in the last regular-season game, a 110-102 loss at Miami. Burke went 10 of 13 from the floor and 5 of 7 from long range, and added four assists in 31 minutes. Zak Irvin • NBA The NBA Draft hopeful averaged 10.3 points in three games at the Portsmouth Invitational, scoring 14 in his last two games. He made 14 of 28 field goals and averaged 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 as- sists in the three games. Joe Kerridge • NFL The fullback signed a one-year deal to remain with the Green Bay Packers. He played in eight games last year and notched one carry — he was used mainly on special teams and as a blocker.
