80 ■ THE WOLFPACKER ■ PACK PAST one point in the season behind the play of ACC scoring champion Jack Marin. They were the nation's highest-scoring team, thanks to Bubas' use of the full-court press he learned under Case. The early part of the championship game appeared disastrous. Moffitt picked up three fouls for the Wolfpack in the first five minutes. Duke looked like it would be- come the first team since Case's NC State squads from 1954-56 to win three consecu- tive ACC Tournament titles. Playing on its home floor, the Wolfpack didn't want that to happen. Worsley came to the rescue again and was completely unstoppable by Duke's gadget defenses. With Lakins and Coker getting him open shots, Worsley made 14 of his 19 field goal attempts, scored a career-high 30 points and pulled down eight rebounds. "It was just too much Worsley for us," Bubas said after the game. "He was the dif- ference. His shooting was fantastic." And unexpected. Bubas thought State's big men would go head to head with Marin, but they kept getting the ball to a wide- open Worsley, who had barely made the opposing team's scouting report. "To me, that showed what an unself- ish and smart basketball team we were," Biedenbach said. "Our guys had seen what Larry was capable of in practice, but I don't think Duke knew much about him. He got the open shots and made them." Worsley was the overwhelming choice to win the ACC Tournament Most Valu- able Player Award, which had been newly renamed the Everett Case Award. He was the first nonstarter to ever win it, something that didn't happen again until 2002. Case, who had been unable to attend the 403 S. Broad Street, Edenton, NC 866 360 5222 6385 N.
