MICHIGAN BASKETBALL Michigan Can't Meet Challenge In Virginia "A lot of people get into runs, but what are you going to do?" Beilein noted. "You've only got so many timeouts, but you've got to make shots to stop the runs and we didn't make a shot and they did. There's not a whole lot you can do." Cavaliers forward Mike Scott and guard Joe Harris did most of the damage, scoring 18 points apiece for the 6-1 home team. Senior Zack No- vak paced Michigan, connecting on a pair of three-pointers on his way to 12 points. The Wolverines as a team stayed in the game from beyond the arc, going 10 of 22 (45.5 percent) from three-point range. Freshman Trey Burke added 11 points and four assists, while sopho- more Evan Smotrycz scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds before fouling out. Hardaway entered the game lead- ing the Wolverines in scoring, aver- aging 17 points a game. Just days after knocking off Memphis and UCLA, and hanging in against Duke, John Beilein's squad faced a different challenge — a true road game in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Michigan's venture into Charlot- tesville, Va., wasn't nearly as warm and welcoming as Maui. The Wol- verines battled hard for a long time in the Nov. 29 pairing, holding a five- point lead six minutes into the sec- ond half, but appeared to lag while Virginia jetted past them, 70-58. "I'm not crazy about scoring 58 points, but not a lot of teams may score 58 points against them," Beilein noted. "Thank goodness we made some to do that. They're tough to get some easy baskets [against]. When you get them, you can't miss them, and we had several of those in the game." The Wolverines experienced one major scoring slump, fueling a 19-2 second-half run with which the Cav- aliers salted away the game. Soph- omore Tim Hardaway Jr. — who struggled offensively, hitting 2 of 9 shots for five points — nailed a three- pointer from the top, giving U-M a 39-34 advantage at the 13:41 mark. Virginia took over at that point, Michigan missing all eight of its shots in a 15-0 UVa pull-away.
