In his starting debut at quarterback, junior Arnaz Battle completes 10 of 16 passes for 133 yards with two touch- downs, the second a 46-yard heave to Javin Hunter in the third quarter to put the Irish ahead for good, 14-10. 10 Years Ago: Sept. 3, 2005 Head coach Charlie Weis makes a sensational debut while watching his unranked Fighting Irish win 42-21 at No. 23 Pitt. The Panthers roll 73 yards for a quick score and a 7-0 lead after the opening kickoff, but Irish quar- terback Brady Quinn leads the Irish to a 35-13 halftime cushion. Quinn then guides the offense on an 80-yard drive in 20 plays to open the second half and make it 42-13. Notre Dame converts 10 of its first 11 third-down attempts and rushes for 275 yards, 100 of them by Darius Walker, while Quinn adds 49 and full- back Rashon Powers-Neal contributes 41 and three touchdowns. Quinn completes 18 of 27 passes for 227 yards, highlighted by a 51-yard screen to Walker for the first score and a div- ing 19-yard reception by junior Jeff Samardzija for his first career TD. 5 Years Ago: Sept. 4, 2010 In Brian Kelly's debut as the Irish head coach, senior running back Ar- mando Allen (93 yards on 18 carries) scores the first touchdown on a 22- yard run in the first quarter during a 23-12 victory versus Purdue at Notre Dame Stadium. Allen also sets up the second TD with a 38-yard punt return, while kicker David Ruffer converts all three of his field goal attempts, the longest from 46 yards. Junior quarterback Dayne Crist completes 19 of 26 passes for 205 yards with a five-yard TD to freshman TJ Jones.
